Kirby Sound Concept

ABOUT KIRBY SOUND CONCEPT

This is a sound design concept I made for a Kirby game, as a part of an exam at Sonic College. All sound / music is designed / written by me.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS

With the music I wanted to underline the bubblegum-like and almost plasticky visuals, and so I decided on the dogma of exclusively using a digital synth module from the 90’s, with a characteristically cheesy sound.

The vibe of the music is fun and light with a warm timbre, but with enough forward momentum to stimulate a suitable level of arousal. When the power-up is activated, there is a sudden shift in tempo and energy to signal the heightened state of intensity, and to signal that the window of opportunity is closing fast, encouraging the player to think quickly.

The SFX and character sounds are a blend of symbolic sounds, harking back to the side scrolling platformers of old, and more realistic sounds, bringing it more in touch with modern sensibilities.
